Step 1: Letter grades become grade points
GPA starts by converting each course grade to a number. On the typical US 4.0 scale:

Typical values — some schools give A+ a 4.3, some don't use plus/minus at all. Check your school's policy.
If your school grades in percentages rather than letters, it will publish its own mapping (for example, letters assigned per band, then points per letter). There is no single universal percentage-to-GPA conversion — resist any chart that claims otherwise, and use your institution's table.
Step 2: The GPA formula
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours
Where:
- Credit hours (or credits/units) measure a course's size — a 4-credit course counts more than a 2-credit one.
- Quality points for a course = grade points × credit hours.
- Totals run across every course in the period you're measuring (one term, or your whole transcript).

Term GPA = 42.3 ÷ 12 = 3.525, which most transcripts display rounded to 3.53.
Notice the leverage: the B+ in 4-credit Calculus pulled harder than the B in 2-credit History, because credits are the weights. The same letter grade matters more in a bigger course.
Cumulative GPA: your whole transcript in one number
Cumulative GPA is the same formula over every graded course you've taken. If you know your current cumulative GPA and total credits, you don't need to re-add old courses — reconstruct your quality points:
Existing quality points = cumulative GPA × total credits so far
Say you're at a 3.40 over 45 credits before the term above:
- Existing quality points: 3.40 × 45 = 153.0
- Add the new term: 153.0 + 42.3 = 195.3 quality points
- Add the credits: 45 + 12 = 57
- New cumulative GPA: 195.3 ÷ 57 = 3.4263… → 3.43
A strong 3.53 term nudged the cumulative from 3.40 to 3.43. That's not discouraging — it's arithmetic. Your term's 12 credits are diluted by the 45 that came before. Which leads to the most useful GPA insight there is:
The later you are in your transcript, the slower your cumulative GPA moves. A perfect 4.0 fifteen-credit term lifts a 3.20-over-60-credits student to (3.20 × 60 + 4.0 × 15) ÷ 75 = (192 + 60) ÷ 75 = 3.36. The same perfect term for a 3.20-over-90-credits student: (288 + 60) ÷ 105 = 3.31. Same effort, smaller move — plan your targets early, and be realistic (not pessimistic) about late-transcript rescues.
Weighted high-school GPA (why some GPAs are above 4.0)
Many high schools reward harder courses by adding bonus points — typically +1.0 for AP/IB and +0.5 for honors, though policies differ widely (check yours). That's how a transcript ends up with a GPA above 4.0.

Both numbers are "real" — they answer different questions. Unweighted measures pure grades; weighted folds in course difficulty. Colleges typically look at both (and often recalculate with their own method), so track both and don't panic over which one a given scale "makes look better."
Converting between GPA, percentages, and letters
Grade systems don't convert cleanly, and this is where honest math means admitting limits. A typical rough correspondence on the US scale — an A band in the low-to-mid 90s and up mapping to 4.0, a B band in the 80s mapping near 3.0 — is fine for orientation. It is not fine for anything official: institutions define their own bands, international systems (UK classifications, percentage-based systems, 10-point scales) map differently, and admissions offices use their own conversion tables.

- Know your number now. Recompute your cumulative GPA each term (two minutes with a calculator). Surprises are the stressful part; the number itself is just information.
- Set credit-weighted targets. "I want a 3.5" becomes actionable when you translate it: at 3.43 over 57 credits (195.3 quality points), a 15-credit term needs (3.5 × 72 − 195.3) ÷ 15 = (252 − 195.3) ÷ 15 = 56.7 ÷ 15 = 3.78 to land a 3.5 cumulative. Now it's a plan, not a wish.
- Work the course level. GPA is downstream of course grades, and course grades are downstream of weighted categories and finals. When one course is on the bubble, the question shifts to what you need on the final — that's where the points actually get won.
