What "weighted" actually means
In an unweighted system, every assessment counts the same: five scores, add them up, divide by five. Weighted grading changes one thing — some categories matter more than others. A final exam worth 30% of your grade influences the outcome six times as much as a homework category worth 5%, no matter how many individual assignments each contains.
Teachers weight grades so the number reflects what they value: mastery shown on exams, consistency shown in homework, participation, projects. For you, the practical consequence is simple: you can't judge your grade by averaging your scores. A 95 homework average feels great, but if homework is 10% of the grade, it moves the needle far less than a 75 on a midterm worth 25%.
The weighted grade formula
Here it is, defined plainly:
Course grade = (category average₁ × weight₁) + (category average₂ × weight₂) + … for every category
Where:
- Category average = your average score in that category, as a percentage (0–100).
- Weight = the category's share of the final grade, written as a decimal (25% = 0.25).
- All the weights together should add up to 1.0 (that is, 100%).
Each multiplication gives you the points that category contributes to your final grade. Add the contributions and you have your course grade.

Add the contributions: 18.40 + 21.25 + 19.50 + 26.40 = 85.55%.
That's the whole calculation. On a typical scale where 80–89 is a B range, 85.55% lands as a solid B — even though this student never scored an 85.55 on anything. The exam categories dominate because they carry 55% of the weight between them.

First, get each category average right
The formula needs one average per category, and this is where most hand calculations go wrong. Two common systems:
Averaging the percentages. Convert each score to a percent, then average them. Quiz scores of 8/10, 17/20, and 9/10 become 80%, 85%, and 90% — average 85%.
Totaling the points. Add points earned, divide by points possible: 8 + 17 + 9 = 34 out of 40 = 85%.
Here those agree, but they don't always. Suppose you scored 5/5 on a tiny quiz and 60/100 on a big one. Averaging the percentages gives (100 + 60) ÷ 2 = 80%. Totaling the points gives 65/105 ≈ 61.9%. Same scores, an 18-point difference — because one method treats every quiz equally and the other lets big quizzes dominate. Neither is wrong; they're different policies. Find out which one your teacher uses (it's usually in the syllabus or visible in the online gradebook) before you calculate anything.
Dropped scores matter too. If your teacher drops the lowest quiz and you scored 70, 85, and 90, your quiz average isn't 81.7 — it's (85 + 90) ÷ 2 = 87.5. Always apply drops before averaging.
Points-based classes: the other system
Some classes skip category weights entirely and run on total points: every assignment has a point value, and your grade is points earned ÷ points possible. If you've earned 460 of 500 points so far, you're at 460 ÷ 500 = 92%.
In a points system, the weighting is built into the point values — a 200-point final is "worth" twice a 100-point midterm automatically. Here's the situation the formula seems to break on: it's week 9, you have homework, quiz, and midterm scores — but the final (30%) hasn't happened. What's your grade right now?
Divide what you've earned by the weight completed so far. Using our example student before the final:
- Contributions so far: 18.40 (homework) + 21.25 (quizzes) + 19.50 (midterm) = 59.15 points
- Weight completed: 20% + 25% + 25% = 70%, or 0.70
- Current grade: 59.15 ÷ 0.70 = 84.5%
That 84.5% is the honest answer to "what's my grade today" — it's what you'd get if every remaining assessment matched your performance so far. The four mistakes that break hand calculations
- Averaging category averages without weights. (92 + 85 + 78 + 88) ÷ 4 = 85.75 — close to the true 85.55 here, but only by luck. With lopsided weights the error gets big fast.
- Forgetting weights are decimals. Multiply by 0.25, not 25, or your grade comes out at 2,000-something percent. (A nice fantasy.)
- Mixing raw points with percentages. Convert everything to percentages first (or work entirely in points if it's a points class). A "17" from a 20-point quiz is 85%, not 17%.
- Ignoring the syllabus's fine print. Dropped lowest scores, replaced grades, extra credit caps, category minimums — these all change the inputs before the formula runs. The formula is universal; the inputs are your teacher's rules.
